Micro-Seismic Monitoring – ESG PETROLEUM
ASESORÍA EN INGENIERÍA DE PETRÓLEOS S.A.S (AIP) and ENGINEERING SEISMOLOGY GROUP (ESG) a Canadian firm, have partnered up in a strategic Alliance aiming at providing Reservoir Monitoring and Fracture Monitoring services by use of the micro seismic technology.
ESG, has over 25 years experience in the passive seismic science and has monitored around 2500 stimulation jobs involving fracturing. ESG has also installed approximately 300 permanent micro seismic systems worldwide.
The advantages or the beauty of micro seismic are the following:
• Capability to interpret micro-seismic events associated to hydraulic fracturing stimulation by providing 3D properties of fractures such as height, length and azimuth.
• Capability to use micro-seismic for purposes of identifying the effective volume of fractures and identifying the fractured areas which can help improve production.
• Real time fracture treatment reporting. Preliminary analysis and calculation of seismic events in situ and reported to the client thus providing information that can be used to change the stimulation program, if needed.
• Use of analytical techniques enabling more in depth analysis and allowing the operator to count on a more comprehensive set of data leading in turn, to improved understanding of the field stresses and the fracture mechanism.

Micro seismic events are detected and measured by use of an integrated reservoir monitoring system named ResMapTM. Resmap delivers real time data on the reaction of the rock to the extraction or injection processes (steam, water, CO2) and it also provides a continuous image of the processes taking place in the reservoir.
- Reservoir characterization: Reservoir modeling and faults mapping
- Optimization of Steam recovery: visualization of the path the injected steam has followed and the zones it has bypassed
- EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) optimization: Improved injection efficiency (water/gas), modeling the reservoirs reaction to flooding and injection.
- Diminished environmental risk: Seal integrity monitoring
- Injection check: ascertains that injection is actually reaching the target zones

The fracture analysis service may be used for purposes of visualizing, interpreting and optimizing well stimulation programs.
Micro-seismic events may be mapped in real time for purposes of visualizing the direction and geometry of hydraulic fractures.
• Mapping of the drainage pattern.
• Setting boundaries to the complexity of the fracture.
• Confirming forecasts modeled with current images of the results
• Identifying asymmetric areas and interactions with faults
• Designing future strategies and upcoming injection stages.
• Optimizing well location planning.
• Determining migration of proppant materials and potential losses to adjacent formations.
• Judging the effectiveness of pressure, proppant materials and other parameters.
